Reviewed by Paul LebowitzHey, isn't the name of this site Kayak Fishing Zone? What's the deal with this new Baja guide book, the one with "Trailer-Boating" right in the title? You're telling me it's kayak-worthy? Darn right it is. Despite his gasoline dependency, accomplished outdoor writer Zack Thomas' thick new tome has a lot to offer the kayak set. Over the past couple of years Thomas dragged a center console fishing boat over endless miles of rugged washboard, to just about every out of the way fishing spot on this peninsula made for adventure. And we're talking about truly remote places, the kinds that attract intrepid kayak anglers. That hard-won first-hand knowledge makes The Angler's Guide to Trailer-Boating Baja essential reading. Thomas doesn't mess around; he tells it like it is, the unvarnished truth on drive times, road conditions, motels and campgrounds, where and what to eat - and what to avoid. Notably, Thomas takes aim at much of the 'conventional wisdom,' dispelling unfounded myths and relating hard-won lessons on dealing with Mexican officials and gliding easily through those intimidating military checkpoints. Thomas plays down his fishing acumen but don't be fooled. The where-to and how-to info are golden, a solid foundation for anglers just getting their Baja bearings. With gear lists, local contacts, copious photos and area maps and all manner of helpful advice on navigating and getting the most out of Baja's incredible landscapes and seascapes, this is one indispensable sourcebook. www.bajatrailerboating.com |
