Hot Gear:

Kokatat Goes Fishing

By Paul Lebowitz

California-based Kokatat has built bomber paddling gear for years. This is the stuff that protects the hardcore from the ravages of cold water, ice, wind, sun and rain, the same hazards fish-obsessed kayak anglers face. Perched on top of a fishing kayak, we get the full brunt of the elements.

Recognizing there’s no fishing-specific paddle wear out there, Kokatat convened a team of expert kayak anglers to produce a set of durable gear that really works. Unlike waders, this stuff is meant for full immersion in a watery world. Let’s take a quick look.

The Tempest Pant is the standout in the new line. Stocking feet with gravel guards keep feet dry when wading or dangling them over the side. The waterproof / breathable mid-rise pants feature a neoprene waist that, when combined with the Tempest Jacket, makes for a flexible system just about up to drysuit standards.

Along with a Kokatat Nor’Wester hat, I took a set of Tempest gear up to Alaska. No problem – whether exposed to soaking rain or the ice-blue water in the frosty glacial lagoons, inside I was dry and warm. Kokatat’s new kayak fishing wear is definitely worth a look for kayak anglers who fish on regardless of the weather. The full line includes an innovative new launch sock, boots, gloves, insulating layers, PFDs, and sun protection. Available ’09; www.kokatat.com.
