X Marks the SPOT - A Look at the World’s First Satellite Messenger

By Paul Lebowitz

On pirate maps of lore, X marked the spot for hidden treasure. In today’s world, the new SPOT Satellite Messenger reveals to loved ones and rescuers alike where to find the most valuable treasure of all – you, the outdoor adventurer.

A GPS receiver matched with a satellite transmitter, the SPOT is a new technology in distress and location signaling. A press of the “911” button transmits a call for help to the GEOS International Emergency Response Center. In turn, GEOS notifies emergency responders. The unit continues broadcasting its location every five minutes until the call is cancelled.

There are non-emergency uses too. Press the “OK” button to send a customizable pre-programmed email or text message to your family or friends, complete with a link to show your exact position via Google Maps. Reassure loved ones back home that all is well – even in remote locations miles from phone service. Backcountry Baja comes to mind. No dial tone, no problem.

During a month of testing on and off the water in Southern California, the SPOT performed up to expectations, even after a saltwater dunking. The unit itself is a bit larger and thicker than the average flip phone; it weighs just over 7 ounces. Strapped onto a PFD, it was forgotten until wanted. Kayakers will be happy to know SPOT is waterproof to one meter for 30 minutes. An easy to see safety orange, it also floats.

The SPOT satellite network covers most of the globe. SPOT literature claims a success rate of 99 percent within 20 minutes for messages sent from the continental US or Mexico. Because SPOT works via satellite networks, dense overhead cover can reduce or prevent communication. Coverage gaps exist in northern Alaska, Hawaii, southern Africa, India, and parts of Asia and South America, although company sources say they are working on closing the holes.

SPOT’s suggested retail price is $169.99 plus an annual satellite service subscription of $99.99. An additional $49.99 enables the unit’s Track Progress mode; when activated, it allows your family and friends to follow your progress in real time.

SPOT: more than a new way to call for help, its peace of mind for the folks back home. www.findmespot.com
