The Standard Horizon Submersible HX471S: Multi-Band Marine VHF in a Small Package

By Paul Lebowitz

When it comes to submersible handheld VHF radios, Standard Horizon is known for packing big performance into a tough, durable, and compact package. The new kayak-friendly HX471S is no exception.

Measuring just 2.4 by 3.8-in and weighing just 9-oz, this compact 5-watt transceiver covers the full marine VHF spectrum: US, international, and Canadian. It features one-key access to the NOAA weather channels and receives and transmits on the FRS band. Set your fishing to a soundtrack: the HX471S includes an AM/FM radio. Also monitor Aeronautical and Multiple-Use Radio Service bands. Memory scanning quickly and easily covers the spectrum.

The radio runs on a 1300 mAH rechargeable Li-Ion battery and comes with both 12-volt and 120-volt AC quick chargers for either vehicle or home use. In a feature of most interest to boaters, when paired with a GPS receiver the radio is capable of transmitting a DSC Distress signal with position. Kayakers will be pleased with its submersible performance; the HX471S is designed to survive continuous immersion as deep as 3 ft for 30 minutes or longer.

This is one do-it-all device. www.standardhorizon.com
