Big Water’s Edge Cleans Up La Jolla

Big Water’s Edge held their annual kayak fishing tournament at La Jolla Shores on July 30th.  The field of over sixty anglers was topped by Chris Fierro, who pulled a 37-pound white seabass out of the kelp. There were some dicey moments when the fish twice tied itself up in the weeds, but Fierro’s braided line proved tough enough to cut its way out. Second place fell to Paul Weintraub who caught a 26-pound halibut on a turquoise and green FishTrap. Another nice fish, this one a 21-pound halibut, earned Team Malibu angler Greg Tsujiuchi third place. Tsujiuchi’s halibut ate a live smelt.

Big Water’s Edge encourages its tournament competitors to collect any floating trash they encounter, a contest they call “Cash for Trash.” The angler who grabs the most garbage is rewarded with a gift certificate. This year it was Andrew Cordova who literally cleaned up. Event placement and raffle prizes were provided by Malibu Kayaks, Shimano, Rancho Leonero Resort, Seeker Rods and many other contributors.

TEAM MALIBU'S Greg Tsujiuchi took third place in the Big Water’s Edge kayak fishing tournament with this 21-pound halibut that fell for a live smelt.
