Easton Tops Plastic Navy Tournament Trail Event

Fishing kayaks proved their worth again on July 9th when Plastic Navy offered the Cobra Kayaks Calico Chaos tournament at La Jolla Shores. Competitors took their stealthy boats into the thickest kelp and close to the boiler rocks in pursuit of big calico bass. On a day described as challenging by tournament organizer Drew Clark, the top finishers in this catch and release event tallied some nice 5-fish tournament limits.

Dave Easton grabbed top honors with 12.9 pounds. Robert Yakemonis wasn’t far behind with four fish weighing 11.46 pounds. Third place went to Ed Pellisier (10.3 pounds). The jackpot was won by Tom Buckalew who weighed in a nice 6.12-pounder. Buckalew fooled his big fish with a Scot Johnson Trix Jetty Worm.

Following the morning’s fishing, the competitors gathered for a picnic and raffle. A range of great prizes such as a new Cobra Navigator XF fishing kayak and a Canon Accent paddle attracted over $700 worth of raffle tickets. According to Clark, the raffle proceeds will benefit the Friends of Rollo youth fishing program.

The Cobra Kayaks Calico Chaos was the fourth event in the Plastic Navy Tournament Trail. With only three contests left, the race for Angler of the Year is lead by Matt Brewer with his 34.23-pound weight. Mark Pierpont (31.9 pounds) and David Easton (29.83 pounds) round out the top three. The next Tournament Trail event will be held on September 17, 2005 at Shelter Island, San Diego Bay. Additional information is available at PlasticNavy.com.
