By Paul LebowitzMay 13, 2005 TWO HARBORS, CATALINA - A new fleet of state of the art fishing kayaks is ready and waiting for the adventurous at Two Harbors, Catalina. The collection of eight Ocean Kayak Prowler 15 Angler Edition sit-on-top kayaks launched by Two Harbors Dive and Recreation Center is the first of its kind in Southern California. According to Manager Hilary Boyce, many fishermen were renting the shop’s recreational kayaks and trying to fish. Now they can fish in comfort on purpose built boats outfitted with rod holders and tackle storage. A rustic resort on the isthmus at west Catalina, Two Harbors is an ideal spot for kayak anglers. Jeff Krieger grew up fishing the island and knows Two Harbors well. Krieger, now a kayak fishing guide, explains what makes the area so special. |
TWO HARBORS Dive and Recreation Center’s new fleet of eight purpose-built fishing kayaks makes Catalina an ideal weekend destination for kayak anglers. Previously, kayak fishing Catalina was inconvenient at best, as most ferry services won’t take kayaks. |
“The water is beautiful, clear and blue and pristine, full of fish,” says Krieger. “It is unique in that it offers two bays. If one side is blown out you can fish the other side.” Each side has year-round fishing for calico bass, and seasonal shots at white seabass, yellowtail, and other gamefish. Even blue water species are not out of the question for advanced kayak anglers. Until Two Harbors launched its fishing kayak fleet, the fabled waters of Catalina were frustratingly out of reach for kayak anglers. Most of the ferries that service the island will not transport kayaks, leaving shipment by air or freight forwarder the only viable yet inconvenient options. The Dive and Recreation Center is making it easy. Boyce understands anglers don’t exactly fish during banker’s hours, and is ready to go the extra mile. With prior reservations, Boyce will help people get on the water at dawn or whatever time they prefer. Said Boyce, “It is important to us that somebody who visits has a great time.” Information on accommodations and services is available at the Two Harbors website: www.VisitCatalinaIsland.com. |
